As an educator for 44 years there are several things I appreciate about Friday Night Lights. I think that it is a show that can lead to family discussions on a wide range of topics: what it means to be a part of a team, faith, dealing with a life changing accident, respect, race, consequences of choices (for both adults and teens). While I do not think high school students should chose to drink or have sex, I realize that it is a choice that many make and it would be unrealistic to show a spectrum of teens without those choices being made. I thought it was good that the drug use sequence developed over several episodes, showing consequences. I appreciate the fact that unlike so many programs on TV, the writers do not resolve problems in one or two episodes. I hope this helps the all who are watching realize that it takes time, patience, hard work and commitment to work through difficult things. I hope those making the decisions come to realize what a special show this is and allow it a second season to continue to grow its audience.

I teach television writing at USC. FNL was by far the best written new show of the year. My class had to choose two shows to spec. We spent three weeks watching sugestions -- none had watched the show or thought they'd like it. I made the class watch it and after three weeks it became one of the specs students chose to write. The show is fantastic. The ratings are low because it wasn't marketed properly and it was given a terrible time slot. NBC -- figure out how to market the show to women so they don't think it is all about football. Give it a 9:00pm time slot or anything other than against Dancing with the Stars or American Idol. You'd have a hit if you knew how to sell it!
